The students of the BG 1st Semester from GDC Thindim Kreeri had the opportunity to participate in a comprehensive training cum practical workshop at the Fruit and Vegetable Processing Training Center in Lal Mandi, Srinagar, on 5th December 2024. This workshop aimed to provide hands-on experience and practical knowledge in the field of fruit and vegetable processing. During the workshop, the students engaged in a series of training sessions and practical demonstrations as part of the skill course “Handling and Storage of Fruits and Vegetables.” The sessions were conducted by experts from the center, who provided detailed insights and guidance on various aspects of fruit and vegetable processing. Students learned the entire process of making tomato puree, including selection, washing, blanching, and pulping. Training included the production of apple jam, apple juice, and apple chutney, with a focus on preserving taste and nutritional value. Students were taught the techniques to produce various jams, jellies, and squashes, ensuring proper consistency and flavor. The art of making different types of pickles was demonstrated, emphasizing the importance of hygiene and correct procedures. Practical sessions covered the dehydration of different fruits and vegetables, highlighting methods to retain maximum nutrients and shelf life. Students were introduced to the fabrication and seaming techniques necessary for packaging and preserving processed products. This knowledge not only enhances their academic understanding but also empowers them to potentially establish low-cost preservation units, thereby contributing to their livelihoods and the local economy. The entire program was meticulously coordinated by Dr. Khursheed Ahmad Wani, whose dedication ensured the smooth execution of the workshop.
